Working in confined spaces

These workers were part of the maintenance engineering team for plant machinery.  Their job often involved working in confined spaces (inside large plant machinery) where the access was through small manholes. Many tasks also required some manual handling of equipment and materials. The plant machinery was noisy and ear defenders were necessary. Much of the lighting when working in confined spaces came from artificial electric lighting rather than natural daylight.

Confined space working is where the access to or from the point of work is through/in a small space making it hard for people and equipment to get in and out and work safely.

Below are just some of the personal stories of workers and their ideas in relation to healthy design working in confined spaces in a manufacturing environment.
